To direct the orderly development of McHenry County through the development, implementation, and enforcement of the plans, ordinances, and policies of the County Board, in a manner that assures the health, safety, and welfare of county residents, protects natural and historic resources, and encourages a harmonious relationship between people, land use, and the environment.

Planning & Development Divisions and Boards
Building Division This Division assists property owners, developers and contractors with their construction projects from the beginning stage to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Completion. |

Commissions, Committees, and Boards The Department of Planning and Development provides staff support to several commissions, committees and boards related to agriculture, community development and housing, historic preservation, gravel mining, regional planning, stormwater management, and zoning. |

Community Development This Division is responsible for administering US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs. |

Planning, Zoning and Land Use This Division is the point of contact for persons seeking to rezone property, obtain conditional use permits, request variations, and subdivide property within unincorporated McHenry County. |

Water Resources This Division assists property owners obtain stormwater permits and responds to concerns regarding site grading, flooding, drainage, wetlands and water supply planning. |

Note: Effective December 1, 2022, P&D will only accept credit, check, money order or exact cash. Effective January 1, 2023, all new building permit applications will be reviewed for compliance with the 2021 ICC codes and the 2020 NEC.
