I found a stray pet...

If you have found a pet, follow these steps:

1. File a found report with us. Call our office at (815) 459-6222 for information on what to do next and to file a found pet report. If you are calling after hours and reach our answering service, be sure to tell them if can or cannot hold on to the found pet overnight.
2. Contact law enforcement or veterinarians. If you cannot hold onto the animal while waiting for our officers to pick it up, you can contact your local Police Department, local veterinary clinics, or the 24-hour specialty clinic, Companion Animal Specialty and Emergency Clinic, in Crystal Lake. These agencies will be able to hold on to the stray pet and contact our office.
3. Advertise. Post flyers in your neighborhood and post in your local Facebook page stating that you've found a stray pet and are looking for the owners.
4. Search the neighborhood. If you've found a dog, walk or drive the dog around your neighborhood to see if anyone recognizes the animal or knows where it came from.

I lost my pet...

If you have lost your pet, follow these steps:

  1. File a lost report with us. Call us at (815) 459-6222 or stop by MCAC's Crystal Lake office at 100 N. Virginia Street to file a "lost pet" report, so we will know if your pet is picked up. Providing a picture of your pet will help us to make the proper identification.
  2. Utilize other lost pet resources. You can Search for lost pets on 24Petconnect and go to this additional list of places to search for your lost pet
  3. Advertise. Post notices at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, pet supply stores, at other locations, and online.
  4. Search the neighborhood. Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times a day. Ask neighbors and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out your contact info and a picture of your pet.

A pet, even an indoor pet, has a better chance of being returned if they always wear a collar or ID tag with your name, address, and phone number. Microchipping is also an excellent form of permanent identification.
