Welcome! Here, you will find all of the events and workshops offered by the McHenry County Department of Health and our partners! Some of these programs are single-day events while others may be weeks or months long.

Animal Control & Adoption Center Events

Pet Rabies Vaccinations and Microchips

Now is the time for McHenry County pet owners to take advantage of low-cost rabies vaccinations for their pets. The McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center is accepting appointments online for clinics in September and October. These are cash-only, drive thru events for McHenry County residents and their pets. All pets must be registered.

Environmental Health Events

Electronics and More Recycling

We are hosting several residential recycling events throughout 2023 for McHenry County residents in partnership with Elgin Recycling, Paper Tiger Document Solutions and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. These recycling events give McHenry County residents the opportunity to drop off items that cannot be thrown away (electronics, fees apply) and other items that can be recycled (Styrofoam, textiles, packing peanuts, fluorescent bulbs and other bulbs that contain mercury and more).

Household Hazardous Waste Recycling

All Illinois residents are invited to dispose of their household hazardous waste at this event. There is no cost to dispose of accepted items, but pre-registering online is required. Examples of items that will be accepted include cleaning products, fluorescent bulbs (tubes and CFLs), antifreeze, drain cleaner, used motor oil and more. For a complete list of items that will and will not be accepted, visit our Solid Waste webpage . Those who wish to attend are encouraged to ensure their spot by using this online pre-registration form.

Clinical Health Events

Wellness Screenings

Wellness Screenings include point-of-care testing for A1C, cholesterol and glucose, blood pressure, heart age assessment, and body mass analysis. Fasting is optional and results are available immediately. Screenings are scheduled each month at either MCDH's Woodstock or Crystal Lake locations, or at various community sites throughout McHenry County.

The cost of screenings are:
$35: A1C & Cholesterol/Glucose tests
$25: Cholesterol/Glucose test only
$20: A1C test only
All screenings include blood pressure measurement, body mass analysis, and education on results.

Take Charge of Your Diabetes
Our Take Charge of Your Diabetes Workshop is a six-week program that allows participants to build skills and learn helpful tools from home. Topics Covered: Monitoring; Healthy Eating; Menu Planning; Medication Management
