What is a Drainage District?

Drainage Districts are local bodies that vary in size. Their primary purpose is to maintain the draining, ditching, and improving of land located within its boundaries for agricultural and sanitary purposes. 

How are the Districts Governed?

Drainage Districts are governed by individual drainage boards that file all their district documents with the McHenry County Circuit Clerk's Office. Only active levying drainage districts file district documents with the County Clerks' Office.

How are Drainage Districts taxed?

The billing for drainage districts are processed through the annual tax bill.

How many Drainage Districts are there in the County?

The total number of Drainage districts on file with the Clerk's Office is three. However, there are many more drainage districts located within McHenry County.

  • The three drainage district's on file with the County Clerk's Office are:
    • Coon Creek Drainage District
    • Greenwood Drainage District
    • Hebron Drainage District
