McHenry County residents are invited to participate in a community-wide effort to recycle electronic items, paper documents, Styrofoam, textiles, bulbs, and batteries at one of the final residential recycling events of the year.

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is proud to host this event on Saturday, September 23, at McHenry County College, located at 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at noon.

MCDH has teamed up with valued partners for this event, including Elgin Recycling, Paper Tiger Document Solutions, and Environmental Defenders of McHenry County.

Elgin Recycling will be accepting televisions and computer monitors. A fee schedule is included below and applies to the recycling of televisions and computer monitors – Elgin Recycling will be accepting credit cards and cash on-site.

  • $15: any size LCD monitor
  • $25: flat screen and tube, 20 inches or less
  • $35: flat screen and tube, 21 inches or longer

In addition to TVs and computer monitors, Elgin Recycling will also accept a wide range of electronic devices, such as computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, notebook, tablet), keyboards, mice, printers, fax machines, scanners, small-scale servers, DVD players, DVD recorders, VCRs, video game consoles, electronic keyboards, portable digital music players, digital converter boxes, cable and satellite receivers, and more. Paper Tiger Document Solutions will provide an on-site document shredding truck to securely shred paper documents free of charge. Each vehicle is limited to four banker boxes or a container of similar size for shredding. Please ensure documents are removed from three-ring binders and/or binder clips before the event. Paper clips and staples are acceptable. This event is exclusively for residential purposes, and businesses are kindly requested not to participate. Shredding services will continue until the truck is full or until noon.

Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be collecting fluorescent tubes/CFL light bulbs for a cost of $0.50 to $1 each and alkaline batteries for $1.00 per pound to be recycled. They will also accept clean Styrofoam, packing peanuts, reusable bubble wrap, and cloth items (clothes, blankets, towels, linens, rags, and shoes tied together by the laces) for re-use or recycling.
