2024 Recycling Events

At this time we do not have a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection date for 2024. The HHW program and funding is provided through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency(IEPA) and the IEPA has not scheduled any events for 2024.   Check the McHenry County Green Guide for locations and details of permanent HHW facilities in surrounding counties.

 Everyday Recycling Options

Elgin Recycling, located at 5114 Terra Cotta Ave. in Crystal Lake, will accept electronics for recycling Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please visit their website at www.elginrecycling.com or contact them by phone at (847)741-4100.


The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County maintains three locations where clean Styrofoam (pink/blue foam siding is not accepted) can be dropped off for recycling:

  • Village of Algonquin, Public Works. 110 Meyer Drive, Algonquin. Open 24/7.

  • Algonquin Township Highway Department. 3702 U.S. Hwy. 14 located, Crystal Lake. Open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • City of Woodstock Public Works. 326 Washington Street, Woodstock. Open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

2023 recycle Holiday  Lights


As of December 1, 2008 the Solid Waste Management Program for McHenry County has been relocated from the Department of Planning and Development to the Environmental Health Division of the McHenry County Department of Health. The goals of the Solid Waste Management Program are to assure the proper handling of solid waste to prevent public health concerns and to maximize the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste generated in McHenry County.
